(Lack of) Summer Holiday
As the Summer holiday's are in their final days, it's becoming noticeable that 2013 has been the first year in a while that I haven't had a relaxing week off. Although we've been lucky enough to visit Dublin for 3 nights in June and spend our August bank holiday weekend at Reading festival, I don't feel like I've relaxed yet. And, worst of all, I don't have any more days booked off work until the end of March next year.
Growing up, I used to love our Summer holidays. They started in Devon and Cornwall - caravanning at Haven and crabbing in Looe - and then moved to Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza. Almost every Summer, we'd disappear somewhere for a week or two and shut off. At some point, I got too old to go away with my parents, so I went a few years without 'proper' sunshine, and then in 2010, Ash and I flew to the Reef Oasis Blue Bay Resort and Spa, Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt for the best holiday I have EVER had. It was relaxed from the moment we arrived at the hotel and were greeted with hand towels and fruit juices, right up until our last meal in 'La Romantique' - where Ash says he had the best steak ever. During that week, I managed to forget about work, about life, and just enjoy seeing a new and amazing part of the world. We went to the Hard Rock Cafe, spied schools of tropical fish off the jetty in the Red Sea and rode camels in the desert before watching the sun set over Sinai. It was totally relaxing and is very much missed.
Last year, we stayed in Portinatx, Ibiza for a week in May. It was early season, so nice and quiet. The year before that, we headed down to Newquay with friends for a week at the English seaside. Although we have a massive trip to San Francisco and Las Vegas booked for next March, my tired head is sad that I haven't been able to disappear to warmer climates this year. There is no better feeling than soaking up the sunshine by a pool reading a book and sipping a Pina Colada. Although, I wouldn't turn down a Norwegian fjords cruise or a Kenyan safari, I am really craving a Balearic getaway to help relax my mind.
Have you been on a Summer holiday this year? Or have you missed out like I have? If you haven't been away, what have you done to unwind?
